IVF Children More Prone To Arterial Hypertension
Studies showed increased
risk
of developing arterial hypertension
for Children conceived through assisted reproductive technologies along with
other cardiovascular complications.
Assisted reproductive
technologies (ART) are a boon to millions and helped individuals and families
who cannot conceive naturally. Among various ART methods the most common are in
vitro fertilization and intracytoplasmic sperm injection. In these methods the
gamete and embryo are exposed to a variety of environmental factors before
implantation. Currently over six million children are conceived using ART worldwide.
A study was done with
around 50 healthy ART adolescents to access the circulatory system. Their
ambulatory blood pressure, artery stiffness, plaque build-up and blood vessel
function were measured. 45 age- and sex-matched control participants of similar
body mass index, gestational age and maternal BMI, birth weight, smoking status
and cardiovascular
risk
profile were taken for study.
After 24-hour
ambulatory blood pressure monitoring it was discovered that both systolic and
diastolic blood pressure was higher in ART adolescents as compared to the
control participants. Almost 7 of the ART adolescents reached the criteria for
the diagnosis of arterial hypertension whereas only 1 of the control
participant reached those criteria.
The most concerning factor
is the increased rate of arterial
hypertension in ART children. It is known that ART
alters the blood vessels in children; however its long term consequences are still
unknown. In this growing population apparently healthy children are showing
more serious signs of concern for early cardiovascular risk, especially
arterial hypertension.
