Pediatric hypertension- A threat for Children
Pediatric hypertension- A threat
for Children
Hypertension
is estimated to affect more than 60% of the population and is the leading
causes of cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular accidents and end-stage renal
disease. Although it is more common in adults, it also affects a large
population of children. Hypertension affects nearly 5-6% of the pediatric
population. Pediatric
hypertension is a threat for children as it can
cause long term health problems.
High blood pressure or hypertension is increasingly becoming a
major problem for children due to the growing incidence of obesity and
metabolic disorders. Hypertension disturbs the cardio vascular system and puts
the children at a high risk of heart
disease, chronic disease and many more lately
in life.
Although children having hypertension are not at the immediate
risk of heart attack or stroke like adults with hypertension but hypertension can still cause
changes in a child’s body and results in many complications in future.
Hypertension also known as “silent killer” because it does not
show any noticeable symptoms should be taken seriously and must be treated
immediately. The best way to uncover hypertension is by blood pressure
readings. Overweight or obese children should be checked regularly and also
children who fall under high risk category such as prematurely born children or
children having kidney problems.
The normal blood pressure measurement for a child depends on
three factors: age, gender and their height/weight. Children who fall above
95th percentile are considered to have high blood pressure. After the
hypertension has been diagnosed the best treatment is to work with the team of
specialists who can accurately diagnose the problem and start the treatment.
Pediatric hypertension is best handled by Pediatric nephrologist who is
specialists in kidney disorder for children. Other specialists like pediatric
endocrinologists, pediatric cardiologists, and nutritionists can also be
included in the team.
A little change in life style and some medication can help the
children and their family in managing the disorder and performing long term
care. Also family education and counselling provide key tools for ambulatory
blood pressure monitoring. Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring tracks blood
pressure changes for 24 hours. Through Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring
blood pressure patterns, pinpoint risks can be monitored and hence doctors can
individualized program that can accurately and comprehensively address each
patient’s needs.
